CENTRAL WISCONSIN SPORTS HEADLINES:
Former Wisconsin Badger tight end Garrett Graham is signing a four year
contract with the NFL Houston Texans. Graham's deal is worth $3,100,000 and
includes a signing bonus of $480.000. Graham was a fourth round pick in
this year's NFL draft...he caught 121 passes for almost 1500 yards and 16
touchdowns in his Badger career. Graham is getting a lot of practice time
with the Texans since another Houston tight end, former Badger Owen Daniels,
is sidelined with a knee injury, although Daniels expects to return to
action before the state of the season.
Former Green Bay Packer offensive lineman Harry Galbreath died earlier
this week at the age of 45. Galbreath played for the Packers between 1993
and 1995, after playing five years for Miami. He was a close friend of
defensive end Reggie White and may have played a part in getting White to
come to Green Bay as a free agent. Galbreath was an All-American at
Tennessee in the 1980's and was serving as the Associate Strength and
Conditioning Coach at Tennessee at the time of his death.
Wisconsin Badger basketball assistant Howard Moore is a candidate for
the vacant head coaching position at Illinois-Chicago. UIC was 8-22 last
season under coach Jimmy Collins, who retired earlier this summer. Moore
formerly coached on the staff at the University of Chicago and Loyola, and
has been on the Badger staff since 2003. Illinois assistants Jay Price and
Jerrance Howard, and Minnesota assistant Vince Taylor are also candidates
for the job at UIC.
The Milwaukee Brewers are activating reliever LaTroy Hawkins, who's
been out of action since early May due to a weak shoulder. To make room for
Hawkins on the roster, the Brewers are sending pitcher Carlos Villanueva to
their 'AAA' farmclub at Nashville. Villanueva threw 13 consecutive
scoreless innings early in the season, but has allowed 26 runs in his last
30-and a third innings, and gave up a grand slam home run to Cincinnati's
Brandon Phillips yesterday.
